July Homeschool Update

Updated: Aug 1, 2020

Assessment - Tom completed his 7th grade assessment - a requirement for our state every 2 years.

Herpetology studies - our herp studies this year cover a really wide variety of topics. One of which is backpacking and outdoor skills. Tom and I have watched a bunch of you tube videos and today the family hiked a trail that has walk-in camping (meaning, hike your supplies in, no car camping) at a recommended trail. We scouted it out for a future backpacking trip for Tom and I. It was beautiful and perfect. I have been waiting for this for so many months - healthy enough to hike, the whole family doing something outside in nature.

The the time came to go backpacking - the weather cooperated, we got the site we wanted, and we had a good time learning about backpacking.

Math

Em completed Horse Lover's Math Level 2. She is enjoyed it, chooses it over other math options, and asked for it when we skipped it for a few days. We went back to Beast Academy when we finished Horse Math. One of the Horse Math topics was about horse racing (as it relates to fractions). I used pool noodles labeled with fractions attached to the edge of the pool and Em used it as a "racecourse" while learning about equivalent fractions.

Tom took the month of June off of math after finishing Algebra 1. We have now begun the next phase of his math journey. The plan is 2 days a week Geometry, 1 day Algebra review, 1 day Herp math/statistics, and 1 day catch-up. We did a Herp Math activitiy using a board with 35 paper lily-pads and black disks to represent Chytrid disease while we studied probability of infection.

Language Arts

Tom has been writing his novel daily and continuing his Druidawn Writing club weekly. We took a month off of his One Year Adventure Novel curriculum but started it up again this week. He started the second half of the curriculum -this half has longer videos and no workbook (novel writing instead of planning).

Em has worked on All About Reading 4 every day. We have been dedicated to it and I hope to finish the remaining 23 lessons before the end of August. Em has been writing a story called Ninja kids - she first did the writing by hand but now does Jot It Down on Google Docs. We put a hold on spelling until we get through AAR 4.

Youth Tube

Em filmed a new YT video (completing a Fizzy Gel Slime kit) and will do the editing in the upcoming weeks. Tom has uploaded 2 new videos on his new channel The Herp Guy.

Other Learning - To be continued.

Summer 2021

Summer was still under quarantine so we didn't do a lot of activities that other summers may have contained. We went hiking each weekend...
