December 2020

2020 is almost over and what a crazy year it has been. Homeschooling has given me stability and I am more grateful now than ever that we homeschool.

Math

Tom started School Yourself Geometry and for the first time in many years says he likes this program. So I am thrilled about that. He does a review of Algebra once a week using NoNonsense Math.. We are kind of taking a gap year for math. He was years ahead but wasn't enjoying it, so we are doing a review of algebra and introducing geometry in a no-pressure, no test format. We will start High School geometry in 2021.

Em completed Pet Math and Vet Maths and has now started on Beast Academy 5 online. The goal is to finish by August then do a year of real Vet Math (for aspiring vet techs) before tackling pre-algebra.

Language Arts -

Tom is working with an editing coach to improve his books and learn the subtitles of written language. It is going well and he enjoys his sessions. He has completed several more chapters of the One Year Adventure Novel curriculum and is getting closer to finishing (hopefully January).

Em finished chapter three of Logic Of English Essentials and is learning a lot of the rules of the English language. We are working on the literary study of Mouse and the Motorcycle for her Bravewriter Dart program this month. She has added more to her Diving With Dragons story and enjoyed a week of focussing on that project.

Science - we have done more science lately but the dissections were probably the learning highlight. Em did virtual labs this time for a worm and a crayfish and Tom did the complete dissection while following along with a video. We looked at all of the parts under our awesome microscope. Tom continues his Herpetology studies and Emily is working on Vet studies. She made a dog model.

This week we started a resin bug project. We have been collecting dead bugs this year and now we are encasing them in resin to study them.

Other Activities:

Eye Doctor time again:

Project time:

Photography - Tom is in week 4 of two Photography classes. One is learning about the DSLR camera and the other is a documentary-making class. Both are going well. He is going to make a documentary about Emily and has enjoyed using the camera to take photos of a friend and the cat:

Christmas is upon us and we will probably do a lighter week of school this week and none next week if they are occupied with their new "stuff."

There's always time for a little fun:

Summer 2021

Summer was still under quarantine so we didn't do a lot of activities that other summers may have contained. We went hiking each weekend...
