Camping in Webster State Park, Kansas.

Webster State Park in September was a treat. No crowds, hot weather, nice campground (Old Marina Campground), friendly camp hosts, and water/electric camper sites. We stayed a week in a shaded, gravel site with only a few other campers (mostly long term Kansas residents who keep their sites through the summer for weekend camping and have homes near by). The campground had grassed areas, a picnic pavilion, a paved loop road, restrooms/showers (free), free wi-fi (although it was broken most of the week that we were there) - enough to check email but not enough strength for gaming or video downloads. A convenience store was a short drive away (1 mile). For a remote store, they were well stocked with food items, RV supplies, toys, swimming supplies, and ice. A nature trail was a short drive or walk from the Old Marina campground but you should pick up a trail guide at the State Park entrance/ranger station as the numbered signs on the trail do not have information.

We drove through most of the other campgrounds in the state park and they each had their own benefits. Some only had a few campsites and may be great for a few families traveling together. See my Webster State Park Review video on You Tube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVUOelpaIKc&t=18s) for more information.

We did a few day trips from the State Park.

Nicodemus National Historic Site is only 12 miles away. Located in a old town hall building, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The room has a video of the area and information signs about the history and cultural significance of Nicodemus. There are other historic buildings with interpretive signs in the tiny town but they are not open to the public. You only need about an hour or less at this site but you can take a picnic lunch to the neighboring park/playground. Pack in what you need as there are no services in this town (although I was told they have a cafe on weekends in the summer).

Stockton was about a 15 mile drive from Webster and we went to the Rooks County/Frank Walker Museum. It was a small museum, crammed with local history and we had a personal guide available to answer questions. You should allow about 90 minutes if you want to take your time through the exhibits. Stockton also has the basic amenities like food and gas that Webster State Park does not have.
